FIRM CULTURE

Fergus Garber Young is a great place to work and grow in the profession. We strive to be a supportive community; one that promotes a healthy work-life balance.

Our studio environment is collaborative and inclusive. Our employees are involved from schematic design through construction, maintaining team consistency from start to finish on nearly all projects. Everyone designs, develops drawings, collaborates with clients, consultants, and contractors, and oversees construction. Furthermore, our teams are organized around projects, not departments.  We have open studio seating, with junior architects and partners intermingled.

Our employees are expected to share responsibilities and behave responsively. We offer flex schedules, while expecting teams to honor deadlines and meet expectations. We take turns making lunch for the whole office every Tuesday; a gathering time for us to present project updates, office news, and share knowledge and learnings. We also occasionally  host industry guests and visit jobsites during those lunches.

Mentoring is important to us; FGY won the AIACC’s Academy of Emerging Professionals Firm Mentorship Award in 2015. We provide training and organized assistance to aid our emerging architects in pursuit of their professional goals. Our support includes taking employees to the AIA annual Convention, Monterey Design Conference, touring jobsites, conducting ArchiCAD training, and hosting ARE study seminars.

We enjoy spending time together. In addition to our Tuesday lunches we also have weekly sketch sessions, and host other fun, educational and philanthropic activities. We celebrate birthdays, passing exams and acquiring building permits, often with champagne.  We hold both an annual holiday dinner and a summer BBQ. We attend sporting events and architectural lectures together. We volunteer at our neighborhood homeless shelter. Each employee contributes and is cared for in our FGY family.
